Guideline to a good Technical Paper

There are times when one is not able to write a good technical paper, and thus he/she looses out on the good scores. Writing a technical paper is different from writing a normal paper. There are a certain things that one needs to keep in mind. Many engineers, business students, get stuck when it comes to writing. Not all of them can write well. They might be good with the practical’s but when it comes to writing a technical paper, they do not succeed. For such students , there are some guidelines to follow. The steps are as follows:
1. Paper title: Choose the paper title wisely. Let the title be short and crisp. It should be relevant to the content that is going to be written. It is advised to have a tentative title before one finalises on the title. Many a times the students by the end of the paper change the title. In order to avoid that, keep a tentative title.
2. Abstract: Before going to the main body there has to be an abstract written. The abstract includes a gist of the whole paper. It is a part where one needs to provide the introduction, glimpse of the main body and conclusion. Abstract is the first thing that the evaluator reads. Thus make it a point that the abstract is well written.
3. Introduction: Depending on the word limit the introduction will be written. Usually it is better to start with a little background of the topic and then slowly moving on to defining it and elaborating with examples. The introduction section has to be an introduction to the body and not the body. It is different from the content that will be written in the body.
4. Body: The next section is the main content / body of the paper. This is inclusive of the main argument that the writers wants to put forth. The argument is elaborately written about with examples and so on. The body can comprise of sub sections if the writer wants . The word limit has to be kept in mind.
5. Performance experiments: This is the section where the writer talks about the experiment that was done with regard to the topic. It can be a survey or it can be an experiment in the lab. The experiment is explained and a step by step presentation is done in this section. The section also comprises of the conclusion / result of the experiment.
6. Conclusion: This is also known as the summing up section. In this the student will write the concluding remarks. This can end with a question, or it can also be an answer. It is the choice of the writer. In the paper usually the conclusion is the answer as there is a question that has to be answered in the end.

8. Acknowledegment: In this section the writer acknowledges the people who helped him/her to complete the paper.
9. Citations: A very important part in any kind of research paper. Citations have to be done for any sources that the writer has referred and included in the work. The more the citations the more is the value of the paper. It shows that the writer has referred a lot of information. One has to follow a particular format while citing.
10. Appendices: This includes the primary sources that have been referred during the work. It can include government reports, documents etc.
11. Check for errors: Before doing the final submission , check for grammatical errors. Many a times students do not recheck the work and they submit it. This can lead to the presence of many silly mistakes. Thus check for errors and rectify them.
